Businessman who joined online peado ring to watch boys being raped avoids jail
David Bibby, 53, from Manchester viewed images of a toddler being tied up and subjected to an obscene act
A businessman who joined an online peado ring to watch young boys being raped has walked free from court.
David Bibby of Manchester avoided jail after he claimed he had been trying to get over a break-up with his boyfriend.
The 53-year-old who was said to have a “‘disturbing sexual interest in children” was tracked down by the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
DHS had been investigating a child abuse racket operating on a conference call video facility involving sex offenders based in America when they caught Bibby.
Over a four month period between August and December in 2016, Bibby logged onto the file sharing application Zoom.
He was known by the username ‘UKCockBoy’, and accessed it with the intention of watching and downloading sex videos of children.
Bibby found a group which shared and distributed the images and and in which 25 perverts would look at the images at any one time.
He sent a message to another member of the gang saying: “Somebody told me there were good videos on here.”
Bibby who was seen to be naked in one of his visits, viewed images of a boy being raped and a toddler being tied up and being subjected to an obscene act. He was arrested 11 months later in November 2017.
At Minshull Street Crown Court, Bibby pleaded guilty to watching and downloaded indecent images of children. He said the offences had occurred after he began drinking heavily after breaking up with his long-term partner.
Prosecuting, Mark Kellet, said: “There was a total of 24 moving images, of which five were category B and 19 were category A. The offending happened over a period of four months between August 1 and December 21 2016.
“This was investigation was undertaken by the Department of Homeland Security in the USA. From the outset, the investigation started in October 2015 and concluded in February 2017 and his offending was within a four month period in that time, and an examination of his Toshiba laptop shows no other offending.
“But these are very serious and distressing images. In terms of that operation in the USA, it investigated a file sharing facility called Zoom. The legitimate use for this facility is video conferences and file sharing, but it has been used by paedophile groups.
“The defendant deliberately went into a closed group, and the agency investigating this made it clear that this group is incredibly difficult to gain access to. Among the moving images, it showed the anal and oral rape of numerous children under four.
“The defendant logged in under the username of UKCockBoy and saw the anal rape of male boys and digital penetration of a child. He was present in the Zoom chat room with other people.
“On another occasion, the defendant was visible and naked and he was watching a video of a toddler that was tied up. On the third occasion there was 25 people present looking at photographs of pre-pubescent males.
“There was a child in another video, aged between four and six, being raped and there was a child, aged between nine and 12, being raped.
“His involvement was shared with the National Crime Agency and he was arrested in November 2, 2017, and it showed chat logs and messages which showed his involvement. In a message, he said ‘Somebody told me there were good videos on here.’
“In a police interview, he said that this was a difficult time for him and that he had been drinking a lot. He also said that he had been in counselling for his interest in children. The offence is very different from going on porn websites, it shows the sexual exploitation of children. He is clearly a man who has a disturbing sexual interest in children.”
Mitigating, Max Saffman, said: “There are no children in his life; he has no children himself and his nieces and nephews are in their 20s. He had no contact with children at all.
“In his interview, he co-operates with the police and he pleaded guilty at the earliest opportunity. He’s a relatively remarkable man previously.
“This happened after his relationship between him and his long-term partner broke down. His ex long term partner is here in court with him.
“His activity on the chat room stopped 11 months before the police came to his door. He has been counselled on this and it came as a shock to him when his past caught up with him. He is incredibly ashamed with his behaviour.”
Sentencing Bibby to a three year community order, Judge Maurice Greene said: “You logged into a conferencing facility where particularly nasty films involving violence and rape of children were being shown and streamed, and you watched these moving images and downloaded as well.
“There are a relatively small number of images, but this is aggravated by the fact that there was a number of other people logging on, so this was a targeted facility for watching these images.
“You pleaded at the first opportunity and there has been a delay, through no fault of your own, in the proceedings. You also stopped watching these images of your own accord.
“It’s quite clear that you accept and you are seeking help with that. I am going to follow the recommendation of the pre-sentence report and give you a three year community order.”
Bibby – who is involved an electronics engineering company – was additionally given a five year Sexual Harm Prevention Order and ordered to complete 50 days of rehabilitation activities.
